What We Do

Agape Prenatal Clinic

Our Agape Prenatal Clinic is staffed by Charlotte Henry, MD and midwife Jean Wislandse. They care for pregnant women by providing physical examinations, blood pressure checks, distributing prenatal vitamins, other medications and educating women about potential pregnancy complications to reduce infant mortality. One year a volunteer pediatrician taught our local staff a hands-on course with techniques for the immediate care of a newborn after delivery, including proper suctioning and ventilation. They’re now using these techniques to save babies’ lives. We work closely with Wesleyan Hospital, a local hospital, to provide critical services on an as needed basis.

Annual Trip

Medical Care

Every year a dynamic team of Agape volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, physician assistants, pharmacists, educators and other support staff travel to the town of Anse-a-Galet in La Gonave, Haiti, to see patients who face tremendous medical and health challenges. Our volunteer team, working at our clinic, makes an impact providing direct medical care and disease prevention for adults and children and prenatal care for pregnant women. We also provide vitamins, antibiotics, and other medications and see approximately 500-600 patients on each visit. We leave behind knowledge and resources that will empower the people of La Gonave. Our trips are seven days and all travel expenses are self-funded. Every dollar goes directly to the people of La Gonave.

Clean Water Access

We have partnered with the nonprofit, Water with Blessings, which trains women of La Gonave how to use and care for their water filters. We have hired a local staff person, Joseph Wilto, to train and follow up with the women throughout the year. He will continue to implement the project that trains women to provide clean drinking water using high-efficiency, easy-to-operate filters. These are simple gravity-fed ceramic water filters which provide 20-25 gallons of clean drinkable water per hour. They’re designed to last up to 20 years with proper care and filter out bacteria such as cholera, typhoid and E. coli as well as parasites and amoeba which causes diarrhea.

Public Health Education

Agape provides simple lessons that will result in healthy behaviors. We supply the education and tools to teach students proper hand washing and personal hygiene. We’ve prepared creative and interactive lessons that teach the concepts of germs causing illness and ways to prevent germs from entering the body. The children are taught that soap kills germs and therefore soap saves lives. We provide a hygiene kit that includes soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and nail clippers. We also provide posters and reusable lesson plans to enable teachers to keep teaching after we depart. The importance of washing and drinking with clean water is emphasized.
